So How Do You Clean Your Grill

I was just wondering on how everyone cleans their grills? I find myself doing it differently then most people I know. Most people usually just give it the ole scrap and brush treatment, and others follow the ole scrap and brush with a few pyrotechnic shots of Pam.

I use a different method that I'm sure some of you guys have been doing. I give it the ole scrap and brush until I can see the metal shiny and polished. I never have the problem with the old stuff never coming off because of the second step. I don't use the Pam shots, but I scrub the grill with an onion half or the top of a pineapple. The onion or pineapple acts as a wet sponge that lifts any leftover grim from the grill. I think the acids from the onion and pineapple act as a cleaner. The result is a nice dark non-stick shine. The non-stick benefit will last too.

I use onions since I always have at least one. It does a good job and smells great, but the pineapple does a better job seasoning the grill. So if you're grilling and have an onion or a pineapple, you may want to try this if you don't already.

Any other good grill cleaning ideas out there? Thought I'd ask since I've never seen anyone discuss it.

After each use, crank up on high. Gotta watch for flames though, so your house doesn't burn down. Scrape. Every once in a while, scrap the insides.

The onion and pineapple on the end of a long fork only takes less than a minute to use. You want to onion scrub a clean grill to start or you'll season the char leftover on the grill. I've been doing this for about 5 years. A buddy of mine who showed me this trick has been grilling on the same grill for about 5 years and it comes clean very easy and prevents food from sticking. Just give it a try and look at the bottom of the onion after you're done. You'll see the dirt left behind from scraper and brush. If you take the second half of the onion and scrub it and then look again, the onion will be clean. It gives some faith that it works well. It makes the air smell great too.

A quick brush and onion scrub after each batch of food grilled is recommended to maintain the non-stick.

Here's my recipe:

1. LONG wood handled brush
2. Squirt it with some lighter fluid
3. Light
4. Scrub

Works great and the extra lighter fluid burns off all the extras. And it's fun!!

** NOTE ** this method is not recommended if you have not already burned the hair off your forearms BBQ'in. this method is also only recommended for experienced grillers and is done under the supervision of professionals.
