I'm on the don't change the hook bandwagon with most others here. As for being productive, I was down on the Carbon about 6 years ago and there was a line up of guys fishing corkies and yarn. No one was hooking anything. Then this guy I'd never seen before came walking up from down by the tailout with 2 nice silvers...the only ones seen that morning. I asked him what he used and he gave me a "0" half and half DN and 4' of 10# leader and said, "try this"...don't reel much, just keep it off the bottom" I did just that, and took home 2 nice fish shortly thereafter. The guy was none other than FishguyKeith whom I haven't seen post here for quite awhile. Thanks Keith...I still use them and STILL find them very productive.

I like to drift them with a light weight just enough to get them close to the bottom of the river. Caught a 12 lb. steelhead last year on a 0 50/50 and many Pinks on the same one. When I find a store with the 50/50 I will buy at least 10 at a time. Trout and Kokanee love them to.

Let's hope they work, I just bought 68 more of the things. Now I have to use them since I have so many.
That's way too many. I'm good at losing lures, so send some on up here and I'll lend you hand sacrificing them to the river gods. ;)

I have some in the frog pattern, a few copper, and a few pink that were given to me, but no 50/50. The way I'm seeing these things described I'm thinking I should just throw 'em all out and buy a gross of the 50/50's.

here is what you do take the tip of the hook and very gently put a slight bend outward away from the shank you should hook and hold more fish even when they are short striking and super light drag if your hook is sharp it only takes 2 pounds of hook set force to get that barb where it needs to be

Well, down this way we only use them for shad, but I have landed many many spring salmon on them as well, I also fished the Snoho last year and slayed the coho with them.. they work very well.

Well since Talsteens started the thread it seemed to turn into an all inclusive DN thread...Thanks T.

As far as technique...is it like a standard drift setup with the DN on the end of a 3-4' leader OR Do most use a dropper of 6-10 inches for the weight and then the 3-4' leader?

Thanks talsteen for starting the thread...thanks all for the input.

VERY imformative.

Hey
You all have good ideas & experiences, but you all forgot to mention one very important detail.
And yes I will tell you ! wink:
I cought Kings, Humpies, Chums, Trout, Blue Gill And nailed the shit out of Silvers on these little D/N babies But all you need to do to get 99.9% hook ups is put a twist in the the D/N hook.
Grab the curved part of the hook with flat nose pliers to where the straight shank of the hook is parrell with the pliers and use your finger and bend it out of alighnment while holding the D/N in the pliers. Tup: Tup: Tup: Tup:

GREAT TIP...somebody..I think Fishin Foolz..gave me the tip for siwash hooks when fishing spoons in the salt. Deffinately seemed to help hookup ratio with the bites we had after trying this.

I'm not entirely sure the 50/50 DN exists, never seen one in a store before.
Devious fisherman buying them all at once I guess.
I just looked for a 50/50 on the Dick Nite site and see nothing that is described as 50/50.

When people say 50/50 are they talking about the ones that are one color at one end,(usually red or pink but others too), and another color at the other end?

I'm sick of never catching anything with corkies and yarn, though from everything I see and read, I do rig that outfit up correctly and fish correctly.
I'm just going to quit using corkies and try spinner, spoons, bobber, jig, bait or backhoe.

I have been to the mansion and toured the factory where all DN are made, Dick even gave me a couple of specials which I have not used. I have used some of the others in the river to catch Perch, Chub, Ide and the ever popular  Eel.

Some folks have asked me what kind of fish I catch, here is a link.

Tup: To the DN and family also to friends in the factory.

The 50/50 is the half chrome, half brass one. I know one of the workers at Outdoor Emporium said when an order of Dick Nites comes in, he grabs a dozen or two size 1 50/50 Dick Nites before putting them up on the shelves just so he has enough. Good to have the pick of the litter!

Thank you mad.
I fish but this is the first place I've been with so many fishers and sometimes the lingo goes over my head.

edit:
And NOW I see it is also described as a 50/50 thanks again!

You are all enablers! I want you all to know that. I just recently purchased a bunch of dick nite spoons and now all I want to do is go and buy another half dozen 50/50s.

I recently purchased nickle/flame red and nickle/charteuse spoons but from the sounds of it, I should return them and get the 50/50s.

However I know the color you use is determined by the water color, so I am facing a dilemma. Would you return the funky colors and get the "go too" color, or would you just keep them all and get the "go too 50/50" as well (which I already have....but now I want more because fishing is the most addictive hobbie around)? I mean, if one outproduces the other 10:1, whats the point in having colors I wont use.......You know what I mean?

Believe me, there are other very addictive hobbies.
I probably have very little fishing gear compared to most here but I also know that I have a lot of stuff...lures especially that I thought I had to have and they would change my dismal catch ratio. Probably 50 to 75 percent have never been in the water.
Try what you have first....maybe you'll find the new hot color.

Hey MrJohn,

Not sure where your located, but If your located near Renton I GIVE you a couple of my 50/50's if you can't find them out in the stores. Mr. Dick Nite was ULTRA-KIND to my family last Fall and sent me an assortment of his lures, scents, hats and pens after seeing a post I made regarding using his spoons while fishing for Pinks. Way Cool.... clap: Tup: clap:

You are too kind, sir.
I'm in Wilkeson....smelly dead pink capital of the NW every other year.
I'm not driving to Renton as I seldom go north of Auburn except if its really, really important or it during a low traffic time,(if there is such a thing).

If you're ever down this way to fish the Puyallup or Carbon or I'm up there, we can meet or something.

Thank you for the offer and I'm now feeling an evil desire to write posts about how wonderful certain lures are and maybe I'll get some freebies too. wink:
Only problem is, I've done too many posts on what a lousy fisherman I am and so they'd probably want proof.

Thanks again and I'll add you to the list of people I pay attention to.

I would keep them. Sometimes if they aren't biting the 50/50, they will bite another color. Also, if you lose your 50/50's then you will at least have a very good back up.

:geek:

I'm gonna divulge a li'l secret here: :?

It's NOT the color of the DN the catches the fish... it's the action of the retrieve and the water that they're fished in.

Ya know why the 50/50 is so popular? Because someone was havin' success with 'em on the Snohomish a few years back and posted it on the Internet. Pretty soon EVERYBODY thought that you had to use the 50/50 or you weren't gonna catch any fish. So... EVERYBODY started usin' 'em and that's why they have such a good reputation.

If all you use is a 50/50... that's what you're gonna catch all of your fish on.

The Dick Nite spoon is a great little lure... but it's no magic catch-all. You still have to know HOW and WHERE to fish them to maximize their effectiveness.

So... don't be afraid to experiment a bit. Tup:

Who knows... maybe YOU'LL be the one to start the next Internet sensation! wink:
