The Smallmouth bass fishing is rated fair to good below Prosser in the spring and summer. Whitefish angling is done during the winter months. The best section of the Yakima in Benton County for Whitefish is from Prosser to W. Richland and in the vicinity of Horn Rapids dam, where there is a boat launch site. Angling for whitefish is good in October and November. Smallmouth and channel cat fishing is excellent in the lower Yakima River. Channel cats average 1 to 2 pounds but can often range to 8 pounds or more. Smallmouth average 1 to 3 pounds. You can also catch largemouth bass and crappie on the lower Yakima near Richland.

Went and hit the lower Yak yesterday from above Horn Rapids, all the way down to the mouth at Columbia Point (all by a small boat) Water level extremely low, and fishing was at best poor. A few reports os small Channel Cats, and only slightly better of Smallmouth's.

Stood in the River just in front of the Neighborhood Market in West Richland and landed a 5lb, 17" smallmouth around 5:30pm. Other than that, not too much, except for a couple of little smallmouth
