Looking at getting sonar fish finder. What features are helpful for the type of fish?

Fishing for trout and kokanee in lakes, and salmon in the Puget Sound/San Juan Islands saltwater.

I've been researching Lowrance, and they offer the Hook, Elite Ti2, and HDS Live. But I don't have the experience or knowledge to know what features are worth spending money on to locate fish.

What is the ideal screen size?

Thanks.

Screen size is personal preference but I would say get as big as you can afford. It makes it easier to see thing when you split screens into different views. An example would be half map and half Navionics chart like seen here. I use a 12" size so I can see it all clearly even while standing up.

Standard 2D sonar is still the highly used and for your use, that may be good enough. The structurescan (side view) helps for locating structure but really applies more to bass and other species in my opinion. Same with DownScan.
