I am sure there are few volvo I/O owners here(or former owners) on this forum. I know these motors never came with a choke, but what I am wondering has anyone tried or succeeded in making or installing one? Would really like to hear some feedback. This motor takes longer to warm up than my old 350.

Is the reason you want a choke because it is hard to start or you want a higher idle so it warms up faster? If you just want it to warm up faster, put it in neutral and set the RPM's where you want them.

My boat takes a good while to get up to operating temp, but I use this time to get the rods ready, put antenna's, turn on GPS's, etc... I have, on occasion, ran the idle a little higher when in a hurry, but I like to just let it warm up on its own.

If you want the choke for hard starts, I can't offer much help with that...

Hey Sean, how about a new/rebuilt carb with a choke? I'm sure you can get a marine carb that fits with a choke on it. Did you get your outdrive issues solved?

DB... I must have just had a little blow by from the power steering cooler and since I didn't drain the manifolds all summer there may have been a little build up. Last 4 times out I drained the manifolds and all has been good...

I have a Volvo AQ200D (305 chev) that is fitted with a 2 barrell rochester that has a electric choke mounted on the side of the carb. Most carbs have some type of choke, the choke allows the engine to run a rich fuel mixture when cold to aid in starting and in warming up the engine. If you don't have a choke you also have to pump the throttle a bunch of times before starting to get the engine to fire. Doing so will in time wash out the oil from all the added gas getting pumped into the cylinders and foul out the plugs. A carb with a choke would be best, electric chokes are easy enough to set up.

it's interersting that our vejhicles have shrouds around the exhaust manifold and the hot air is routed into the carb when cold. can't do that on an I/O, no exposed hot exhaust manifold to divert hot air from. Dpoes a choke really make them woarm up faster or just help with cold starts or both?
I'm excited. I can;t wait to get out in it here soon. football weekend huh? no time to hit the l;ake for a trial run huh? I have your marine batery, tell the ol fart to qwuit buggin you about a dam battery. it's the least of your worries LOL! hahahaha wink:

Nightcrawler; I guess you'll just have to ride along with FDB whenever he needs help with a cold start. You can just breath into his carb and fill it with hot air. Should fire right-up! (Sorry couldn't resist...) :D

Nope, Cannons for me. I can send you a pic of where I mounted them, but I have plenty of room on my transom. I wish I could move them forward some, but the gunnels are very narrow and I don't want to use the pole mounts.

My choke is electric, doesn't work too well. Definately cold blooded in the winter. I put a choke cam from another 2bbl carb I have on there for awhile to step the idle up, which worked fine, until you wanted to start it cold and only move a bit slowly back into the school of fish. Sucked for shifting with the idle so high too, polished the gears a little too much with a Cobra for my tastes, they eat gears too easily so I took it off and bought a Honda kicker.

I hope I wont be regretting not getting out at halftime.

ps, the choke will make her warm up faster, with no choke that means we will have to get up earlier for first bite sick: !
