Anyone know what the plan is for the Viaduct? That gas tax was passed in 2005 even had to have the emergency clause put on it to prevent citizens from fighting it with a referendum. They scared people into supporting the gas tax but as far as I can tell, haven't done a damn thing about it other than collect the money. If anyone knows where that money is going, I'd like to hear about it.

Was the gas tax meant to exclusively fund a new Viaduct or an alternative? I thought it was supposed to go to the state DOT projects budget?
If so... then they're probably spendin' a lot of it in Snohomish Co. There have been a lot of projects of all types going on up here. Tup:

I imagine it's easier for Krissy to just jack us for some tax revenue. She can then pay another mil or two for some Salmon sculptures along the freeways so we feel better about it. Or maybe even some stamped concrete walls with nature designs so we won't feel like we are out of touch with nature driving through a shiat hole like lynnwood or Kent Auburn at 65mph. All good spends btw

I'd MUCH rather give a few pennies of my hard-earned money to the State to be able to see some nice salmon sculptures while I'm drivin' to work... than to give Exxon-Mobil thousands of dollars to hire a legal team to help them shirk responsibility for the next environmental disaster that they create. :?

Regardless of the price per gallon at the pump the oil companies sell their gasoline based on the cost of crude and only average about 10 cents a gallon profit after a considerable risk and financial investment to find it, refine it and bring it to market.
The reason the barrel price is so high and your cost is so much at the pump is because of people like you and Owl Gore who don't want America to drill for and refine her own abundant sources of oil and are forcing consumers to pay what ever price is dictated by the likes of OPEC and Hugo Chavez. People (mainly 'conservatives') LOVE to whine about having to pay a few extra cents a gallon for gas... when that money goes to maintain and improve our infrastructure... ultimately benefitting US!
Yet they lick the boots of companies that gouge US at the pump for dollars a gallon profit... and NONE of that profit benefits US... unless we happen to be an oil company executive or a major stockholder. conf:

The only complaint I ever hear is that the tax should be lvied in a fashion that makes it deductible from your federal taxes. There by lessoning the total tax burden of which WASH,. is very high because of all the various taxes that are broken out or hidden.

Oil companies make approx. 10 cents agallon in profit to the state and Federal government's profit (tax) which averages about 62 cents a gallon which is over 6 times greater.
How exactly do you purport the oil companies,"gouge US at the pump for dollars a gallon profit"?

Birch, when you are making $40 million in profit you are sticking it to someone. How about doing a good thing and helping out their fellow americans in this time of economic hardship and only making $20-25 million in profit and dropping the price a little? Not to be outdone, the State could actually cut back a little and reduce their take in taxes as well. So could the Fed. Then everybody wins as the consumer saves some money, Big Oil still makes a profit and whichever politician actually has the "stones" to pull this off wins re-election in a landslide. I know, but it is my fantasy.

The 5 major oil companies ALL posted RECORD profits last year.
The price of crude oil DID go up a considerable amount.
The amount of gasoline consumed in the United States DID NOT go up the same proportional amount as the cost of crude oil.
So... if oil companies are only making 10 cents a gallon profit... HOW were they able to post such high profits?
I could see the cost of gasoline rising and falling with the cost of crude oil... but it didn't. When crude reached $100 a barrel... gas was $3.23 a gallon.
When crude dropped to $65 a barrel... gas was STILL $3.23 a gallon?
We didn't have any major hurricanes hit our oil-producing regions.
NO major terrorist attacks occurred on oil-producing regions.
The Federal gasoline tax did NOT go up a buck a gallon.
How come gasoline is so expensive and oil companies are making such large profits then?
King... gasoline unfortunately isn't a commodity that you can just "do without"... like milk for instance. The free market / competition will keep prices low approach doesn't work with gasoline. You can't just go and start up King's oil company, undercut the competition and start making money. EVERYTHING in our economy depends on oil one way or another. This unfair advantage... coupled with the fact that the number of competing companies is shrinking is giving an unfair, monopolistic advantage to big oil.

Sure it is. Webo its a life style choice people make. People choose to live in Sumner and commute to Seattle for a variety of reasons. but all of them are choices plain and simple.
