I am looking at getting a .40 caliber, semi-auto handgun. Most of my handgun experience is with revolvers. I have narrowed it down to these 4 guns. If anyone has experience or knowledge with any of these I would really appreciate the help. All of these are below $500, if you were wondering why I chose only these. Smith and Wesson M&P, Stoeger Cougar(formerly Beretta), Beretta PX4 storm, and Springfield Armory XD. Thanks, Mike

I don't have any experience with those models, but I do have a Beretta 92FS. It is a 9mm, I'm pretty sure the model 96 is the 40caliber model of the same gun. I am very happy with the Beretta, it is easy to break down making cleaning easy. I'm sure someone will chime in who has experience with those models. One of the biggest things in choosing a gun is fit.

I have the M&P in .40. It is a decent gun. You will have to be selective in the ammo you shoot though as the firing pin can be a little picky. I had one box of ammo (50 rounds) and I had probably 10-15 that did not fire. I like the changable grips on it though, which make it easier to fit to more than one person.

FM---Out of the choices you presented I would be partial to the Springfield XD. They are very well built and remarkably accurate. Their popularity has really taken off and as such many factory and after market parts are available to upgrade or repair should the need arise. Good luck in your choice.

another vote for the XD... But Ive got the .45. The sweet thing about the XD 45 is it holds 13 +1

It is also accurate. Its the best shooting auto I have, Shoots everyting, no jams, easy to clean/disassemble. And If you do some looking you can get it for about $459.00, with a carry case, 2 mags, and a belt holster... a sweet auto for the money!

That's what i really like about my M&P .40...it is 15+1 if you get the full-size. With that said, I have been looking at trading in my M&P for the sub-compact XD in .40. That is a sweet gun. Tup:

The Springfeild is the best choice from your list. Though I'm curious why you don't have a Glock as a choice They run, and run with 0 problems. If I can't carry my 1911, I'll take any lock any caliber. I have a G27 and its amazing how well it runs for such a tiny auto.

The Glock 27 just does not feel right in my hand. The Springfield really does fit my hand very well, I am really leaning that way.

Fishinmike, take a look at the Glock22C. It is an awesome weapon. I got one from the guys on the dept when I retired. It's a .40 and is compensated. It comes right back on target after every shot. I also have a 19C which is a 9mm. Same thing but ammo is much cheaper. I have never had a malfunction with either of them. I have always been a SigSauer fan until I bought a Glock. I do a lot of shooting and swear by them.
