Hi, I live in Seattle and went down to portland and bought a new 16' driftboat and trailer. I went to the DMV tonight and got the plates for the trailer no problem.
I do not understand the requirements if I want to put a 5hp outboard on it to run around Lake Washington/Sammamish. I also have an electric. I really dont want to pay $600 in the tax.

DMV says
"Any boat or other water vessel that is 16 feet or longer, has a motor larger than 10 horsepower, or is used on federal waters must be registered in Washington through the Department of Licensing (DOL). Smaller boats must be used only in nonfederal waters to be exempt."

is the electric ok with out boat tabs?

Can I use the the 5hp wth out tabs?

What are Federal Waters?

What about Salt water?

thanks for any help.

Lk Washington, Lk Samamish, Most of the Columbia, and all saltwater is considered "Federal" water. (this is not the complete list though...)

Technically if you put ANY mechanical propulsion on the boat, you'll need it to be registered if in Federal water.

Hate to be bring the bad news, but I think you're going to have to pay the taxes and licensing.
