I saw on CNN that the Monte Carlo Hotel in Vegas (is) was on fire today. it started on the roof and spread 4 floors down. No injuries were reported thank goodness, but it snarled up the traffic because they closed that part of the strip. Last time Vegas had a fire was the Hilton in the seventies and people could not escape other than jump from windows to their deaths. Thank God this wasn't the same case. People in the casino were refusing to leave the tables..come on.

The other big fire was actually Novemebr 21, 1980 at the MGM Grand Hotel. It was the Friday before Thanksgiving and the ex and I had just flown in to spend a week with the in-laws in Vegas. It was ugly; was and still is the worst disaster in Nevada history. It sounds like things went better this time but you have to wonder about all the foam and plastic construction materials in the modern casinos...

Talk to anybody who's worked in a Vegas casino and ask about people refusing to leave the gaming floor and you will get an earful. My ex wife's family is all in the gaming industry; they would tell stories about people urinating (and worse) at the crap table if they were on a streak.

This is horrible news. The Monte Carlo is one of my favorites.

The brewery on the first floor has by far the best beer in Las Vegas.

I was down there too, ironically speaking/teaching at an NFPA (National Fire Prevention Association) seminar. I remember it well.
