My four most memorable moments since getting into the radio biz on KJR:
1. My first show EVER: I went on the air about 15 minutes after the Space Shuttle disintegrated over Texas. I was doing my first live radio show while watching the footage on CNN. Very, very surreal.
2. Chasing John Clayton out of the studio forever: I personally thought that cooking some fresh-caught spring Chinook live in studio would be fun. It WAS fun and delicious ... except Clayton had his show on right after "Wild Country" and did NOT appreciate the aroma of fresh-grilled salmon and Garlic Gourmay Garlic Mesquite Rub that permeated the studio for the next 6 hours. He continued to bitch about it through his national NFL show on ESPN, and for a week afterward on his various Groz with Gas appearances.
That said, Clayton has been a great supporter of Wild Country, and is a truly great guy.
3. A conversation with Bob Knight: The day we sat in for The Groz and had a 20-minute segment with Bobby Knight was one of my favorite interviews ever. Everybody hates Bob Knight. I personally love the guy. He was really good to us, too.
4. Herzog's "Ring of Fire": Bill Herzog unwittingly eats a habanero-laced olive live on the air. Eric Linde was in studio with us that morning, and politely passed on the "nuclear olive". Herzog didn't. If you were listening closely, you could hear him gasping "Oh sh*t! Oh, sh*t!. Oh, sh*t!"
KJR is a great station. It's funner to work there than you can imagine.
