Just bought a 20' Maxum. So far have Horn, flag, 7 life vest, endorsement, running on v6 in/out. Don't know what engine because there were no brand on it. But just need to know what else I need to take out to the lake or sound without violating any rules.

You need a "dewatering device", basically a bucket or bailer. A whistle is a good idea. Optional>>Trash bags and rags or paper towels , depth finder, camera and coolers. Pliers with cutter.Duct tape or electrical tape. Maps, compass and.or GPS. Don't go any faster than you are willing to hit something. Have a great time!!

Figure out what kind of engine it has before you need to service it, and read up on the "known" issues for what you have. :) There should be tell tale signs.

Add a water separator if you don't have one.

Add a bilge pump or second bilge pump. Add a second battery with switch if it doesn't already have one.

Add an anchor with rope and learn how to use it. Add a wind sock to keep the drift going straight.

And remember to not disengage the winch hook and safety chain until the boat is ready to be pushed off - but do install the plug and remove transom straps before backing down.

Be sure the flares are current (they have an expiration date), fire extinguisher is "in the green" and the horn works. Boat lights functional? Are PFDs CG approved? Know the rules as to age kids must be wearing a PFD.

If this is a used boat is the fuel fresh? New filters?

If you don't have an auxillary motor you might want to consider tow insurance.

And here is a link to the WA Boating Guide: boat.wa.gov - Boating Regulations in Washington State.

Edit: JimH snuck in while I was typing so some duplication. An observation is that the more times you see a particular recommendation consider it reinforcement!

Real life event - last week a 19 foot outboard experienced a fire in the engine just off shore from our beach place. Despite use of a fire extinguisher the fire moved to the boat at which time the two occupants grabbed some personal items and went into the water wearing their PFDS. A neighbor got one in his skiff and towed the other to the beach w/o injury. Stuff happens and being able to react quickly and appropriately is critical to the outcome. The boat burned to the water line and sank.

Glad that they had the PFDs and that your neighbor was "johnny-on-the-spot"!

Sad to hear that they lost the boat.

During your years owning a boat you will forget to remove the transom straps, will not put in the drain plug, will not hold onto the bow rope when launching the boat (I did that once and had to take a quick swim). As the old saying goes "Shit happens"; but it is all fun. Well it is all fun unless your wife is watching and then your are in for "A pile of shit" Have a great time with your new boat.:);):(

Oh, and you forgot to mention that virtually everywhere you go someone is videoing and if you screw up it will likely be on YouTube or, worse, directly shared among you best friends.
