DUI checkpoints?

Apperantly our Governor was next door to our house today at the High School trying to use a DUI victim to pump up her latest plan - DUI checkpoints. Personally I am fed up with too much government telling me how to live my life. What is next? Tdown:

I disagree, anyone stupid enough to drink and drive deserves the extreme consequences. If I thought an extra $100 a year in taxes per household would get them all off the road I'd pay your share!

Out of curiosity, why does that make you mad?
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

I hear ya SJ. But isn't driving a privilege and not a right? I can see the privacy frustration, but they're out there saving lives.
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

As long as they're not searching trunks or infringing on privacy rights, I don't see any problem with DUI checkpoints. Nobody has a privacy right in driving under the influence. It's not like people are getting abortions in their cars (not yet, at least.)
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

I agree with the overall government interference SJ but for the DUI thing, it just shows how bad it has become. Just recently some dude was arrested for his 15TH(yes fifteen). Then the other day someone was killed on HWY 18 right at the Green River Bridge at 430am, It could've just as easily been someone from this site if it was in november when the fish were in

none the less, many people I have met in my life have been affected by drunk drivers. My own uncle was hospitalized about 15 years ago when a drunk driver hit him on his motorcycle.

HOWEVER, still seems like a strange way to fix the situation. only time will tell if it helps i suppose
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

As far as I'm concerned, it's about time! clap: clap: Drinking and driving is the absolute worst form of irresponsibility. Random checkpoints will both catch and hopefully deter people from drinking and driving. I won't mind the hold up one single bit if I get snared by a checkpoint and have to wait. I welcome it. BRING IT ON, and BRING IT ON NOW.

What's next? Hopefully something along the lines of 3 strikes and you're out for DUI convictions. Loss of license, loss of vehicle, jail time and so on.

I applaud our governor for joining the 29 or so other states that employ this method. I think they call it "drinking, driving counter attack" up in BC. Tup:
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

Personally (since I never drink & drive) I think your real concerns need to be toward those "Speed Cameras" that will soon be on every major roadway in this state!!" You'll be seeing your monthly "Speeding" bill in the mail.
And guess what? Even if you are not driving your rig and someone triggers the camera YOU GET THE TICKET if the vehicle is in your name!!
And here's the best part, even if your friend or family member who was using your rig pays the ticket for you, It still goes on your record and will of course be impacting YOUR insurance rates.
Now I am not saying I am a speeder, in fact ask anyone who knows me I'm a grandpa behind the wheel. But I also don't stare at the speedo the whole time I'm driving and have caught myself (as I am sure ALL of you have) doing 5 to 10 over from time to time. Will that little lapse in attention to speed cost me in the future? I'm guessing it will!!
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

So with all of this support towards these DUI stops how are they going to "Safen" up the roads, when the drunks will be right back out there the next day as they do today. Somoeone mentioned the guy with 15 DUI's ... is a DUI checkpoint going to stop him? You are kidding yourself if you belive so.

If they were to stiffen the penalty system to a point that it would detour a person from further drinking and driving again, then it would be supported, as it stands right now this is only an avenue for the State to generate more DUI convictions, and the revenures they gain from each one.

How would checkpoints increase "your" safety? Where would they be located to benefit you? Every mile? Only on the freeway? Pulling someone over and intentionally searching them without probable cause is total crap but just keep offering your freedoms away in the so called name of "safety" and when you have Big brother telling you when you can and cannot leave your house on a given day you will look back and wonder WTF happened?

Pretty sad.

This world is out of control...try to create a program to control drunk drivers and people scream about it, but if those same people get hit by a drunk driver they will sue the State for not doing more about drunk drivers...... sick:
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

I am all for these check points. While they are at it I wish they would ask for a valid license and insurance card. Driving is not a right it is a privilege, be legal and be on your way. I think if SJ had a drunk driver kill a family member he would be all for any tactic to get these criminals off the road. I can speak first hand my family has experienced two DUI related deaths in the last five years.

I must be missing the part where a checkpoint is going to control drunk driving  . Will it generate more DUI convictions? Absolutely and I am all for that Tup: . will it keep them off the road so we dont have anymore of these clowns getting 15 dui's? Not a chance. If they grouped a checkpoint together with a penalty so stiff a person would be totally stupid to ever pick up a glass or bottle again then it would be a good thing but there is no talk of that.
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

I agree with Sportjet it's a PR tool. Sure they will get a few more DUI but they would get even more parking patrol cars outside of bars and watching people leave. How can anyone say the state is serious about DUI when a guy that killed 3 people in a DUI crash only gets 14 years?

I pray you guys dont lose a close family member to a drunk driver. If you go you will look at this in a different light i guarantee it .
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

SR5,

I would like to see stronger action not just some feel good policy. Make DUI A felony similar to attempted murder. Minium 1 year in jail first time, second offense 10 years.

BTW I lost a friend in college to a DUI crash on the Tacoma narrows bridge.
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

I am 100% against checkpoints. Why punish the masses for the actions of afew? I know it would piss me off to no end to have to sit in line at some checkpoint. And waste my time and $$ when I never drink and drive. I would much rather see stiffer peniltys for those that do drink and drive.

Any loss to a DUI is a sad one and I appreciate your opinion on it, and why it is.

Dont get me wrong, I would love to see a true tough guy approach to it. Whether it is DUI's, Pedophiles, rapists, hell, throw the slimy tweakers into the mix as they arent any better. The reality is we are allowing all of these law breakers to commit the crime, and since we have such a failure in our judicial system we allow them to come back and do it again and again. In the meantime the good law abiding citizens are being forced to make more and more sacrifices to the freedoms and rights we respect and follow, and that is why its wrong. It is time to stop putting bandaid methodoligies in place and start laying down the hammer on these people. Right now a person gets arrested for DUI and is back on the street to drink it up the next day and that is where we are missing the boat.
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

So SJ it is better to sit back and do nothing ? 90% of these DUI check points will be late in the evening. Will it be a inconvenience sure, will it save a life I bet it will. Lets give the local police every tool we can to make it safer to be on the road. It maybe your wife or kid that it saves. So I will apologize to anyone that gets delayed 5 minutes due to a check point. I did fail to mention that it was two separate accidents that my family members died in. So while most of you will not have to get the 11pm phone call that tells you there has been an accident and it is bad. Our family has gotten it twice so I am all for doing what ever it takes to get my family home safe.
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

I certainly understand SJ's opinion on this. I am tired of the goverment stepping in and trying to "save" us from ourselves. If they really want to detour drunk driving, they should be increasing the penalty.

Yes, I understand the loss that drunk driving can cause. In college, my favorite teacher and 2 of her 3 kids were killed by a drunk driver. To this day I feel sorrow for her remaining family and pray for them as a drive by the sign on the highway. But, do I think stopping the masses is the way to check each driver is the best way to deal with drunk driving? NO!! Will it have any affect on me? NO!! Heck, I'm ussually in bed by 10pm and I don't drink more than about 1-2 beers per month, I still don't think it's right!
Re: DUI checkpoints? Is America really free anymore?

When how YOU choose to live affects how I live, then I have a problem. I am normally on your side Sportjet, but when people make decisions that can permanantly change or end my life or someone in my family, then there should be a checkpoint on every corner. There is just a certain percentage of stupid people that can't make decisions for themselves which is fine by me until it can affect me.
