Well my uncle and I left KIrkland at 8 pm and made it to the mouth of the Clearwater in 3 1/2 hrs. Tossed the bags in the back of the truck and caught some zzzzzzz. Woke up the next morning to freezing temps ands clear skys Tup: We rolled up the road to the spot where we were to launch. Water was in great condition with at least 3 feet of vis and only two boats in site. A few holes into it I miss a fish, Sean rows the boat back up to the top of the drift and we give her another shot. My uncle got the front seat so his bait being the first through the he gets a thump thump, FISH ON!! We get it to the boat and its a real small steelhead about 2 lbs, let it go and we are on are way. Drift for a bit then my uncle hooks another fish not much bigger then the first, we release it and keep on rollin. A few mile go buy with out a bump then I feal a thump thump, I managed to hook a 16'' cutt. I few passes later my uncle hook the fish of the day, you could tell it was big and was not going to come up with out a fight. After trying to have his way with this brute it raps his line around a stick, we row over to it and pull the line up and get the stick untangled. After that the fish get into some other structure and busts off. We go a long ways after that wonder where the fish are, my uncle was 2 for 3 and i had a little troot. We get about a mile from are take out and my lucky uncle hooks another, its a little bigger then his first two fish and has a clipped fin. IT was getting close to dark so we boogied to are take out, we spoke with one other boat there and thay got 4 the day before and nothing today..

All in all it was a great trip, I got to get over the OP, learn a new river, get away from the crouds, and see some small but beutiful fish caught. It beats a day at blue creek for sure Tup:

Here are a few pics from the trip, I dont have pics of fish but I did film them and will upload with youtube.

Re: Clear water preport

It is POURING up here on the OP. Going back and forth from snow to rain. Its not sticking, but if its doing the same out on the west end, it'll be punched.

I'll be amazed if there was more than 4 inches of viz in that river this morning...like I said, no trees left around it, that river punches if someone spits in it up above...hopefully the guide had a backup plan and they got out somewhere else, probably somewhere an hour or so north of there!

Fish on...

According to the guy I fished with there are only a few uncliped stray fish from the salmon river that go up there, the rest are wild. Would rather of caught a 20+ nate then 2 hatchery fish, never the less it was a great day!!! I did see a pic of a nate around 30lbs he got on that river, holy COW!!!!

Re: Clearwater river report

Mayfly,
Thanks for the report. I've always wanted to float it. A couple of questions. How long miles is the float and any technical water / sweepers etc to watch out for?
Thanks

Nice report, I fish the Clearwater on a regular bases on a couple different drifts. Yes, there is a little rough water on the lower drift with a couple small boulder garden areas but for the most part it's just a small ROCKY stream. The upper drift is better suited for a guy who is very good on the stix and probably better off in a raft.
Be carefull especially since the sun seems to always be blinding you as you pick you way thru the tougher spots.

The Clearwater is a great river when you pick the right time. Lots of variables on this little stream. It gets netted heavily the Queets gets netted heavily the logging all along it's banks makes it dirty very, very fast and takes forever to drop back into fishing shape. Your in a true rain forest that can dump 5 inches of rain in a matter of hours making your window of opportunity for success a very small one. One pretty drift with elk, bears and deer just about everywhere.

Re: Clearwater river report

Glad the weather missed you! It switched 180 degrees and came from the NE, dumping here in PA, giving you the rainshadow over there! You dont see that very often!

Looks like a fun trip. Great pix too... Tup:
