I took advantage of the calm between wind storms and got out on the salt today, fishing the Jefferson Head / Presidents Point area.

Being the only boat in the area, I was shadowed all morning by an opportunistic seal, who my followed my every move for over 8 miles of trolling. This particular seal had the routine figured out. Every time I rushed to my pole and removed it from the pole holder, the seal would dive and search.

After catching and releasing one unmarked blackmouth plus losing two fish to the seal, I decided to put some distance between the seal and myself by moving to one of my favorite areas on the south side of Jefferson Head. Soon after I arrived at this spot I caught and kept a very fat 13 lb*, fin clipped 28 blackmouth. I had been trolling a brisk 3.25 mph (water speed) with silver & glow flasher and a green spatter back hootchie, right on the bottom in 137’ of water.

No pictures this time. I forgot my camera and was going to take a picture when I got home. However that plan went out the window when the fish had an embedded wire marker and the WDFW checker took half of its head.

If you are down there this weekend stop by for a brat and a beer, I'll have the BBQ going. Might even pass out some BBQ chicken to some of those guys down there like I did last weekend.
That really opens up the hole when they all come up for some BBQ.

You're a pretty hardcore guy H.B. getting out for winter BM on a day like today. Too bad about the seal situation. I know what you mean about the fishchecker messing up a photo op too. Last summer we got a nice 20+ lb. king in Elliot Bay.
The camera battery went dead and we figured we'e get some shots back home. The the fishchecker turned the king into Frankenfish!

Anyway, nice job getting out and scoring some fish. Good report!

Congrats on the catch HB. I'm dyin' to get out. I hope maybe a week from tomorrow or Friday. It'll be my last chance to get on the water until Springers probably.

A note on the coded tags. I know the removal of the snout makes a funny looking fish for a photo-op, but it's important science. It will help in the management of future fishing oportunities. It can also be very interesting to learn where your kept fish came-from. My wife works in the tag lab in Oly, removing and decoding those tags from the snouts. If you request the info when the checker takes the snout, they'll send you the history of your fish. It's neat!

Way to go HB!! That's a nice winter BM. How was the water (ie. clean or were you dodging floating weeds and debris)?

Way to go HB! Sounds like you need to invest in a paint ball gun for the seals wink: At least it would give you something to do while you are tolling around.

Hey Matt, Got an extra seat? I have next week off and I'll pay for the fuel! I would love to get out on the water for a few hours.

Nice job Tup:

about the fish checker, what if you were going to get it mounted though? I've also seen them take part of the head of some peoples fish on the cascade right below the hatchery, we already know where there headed anyways.

I'm not sure any tagged fish would be "worth" mounting, and besides that... the better thing would be to have a replica made.
