Green River Reports

The Green river gets stocked annually with over 100,000 winter steelhead smolts, but in recent years Anglers bag on the average of only 1000 to 2000 fish. The glory days of steelheading on the Green river seem to be over. However some good winter steelhead fishing can still be had in January through February, Silver and chums can be caught in early to late fall. Fishing locations can be found from Kent upstream to the Head works. Some of the most popular areas for bank access can be found around the hwy 18 bridge such as the car body hole and along the Green Valley road in spots known as Ogrady Park, Metzler, the Cornfield, the strawberry field, Slaughter house hole. Other bank access can be found along the Green River road that runs along the east side of the river between Kent and Auburn. Boats can be launched at the Whitney Bridge just off of the Green Valley road or at Flaming Geyser State park, take out is at the hwy 18 bridge. DIRECTIONS: Upper stretches follow hwy 18 to the bridge that cross’s the river just a few miles out of Auburn, drive SE on Green Valley road from the hwy 18 bridge to several locations mentioned above. Lower stretches can be found by driving along Green River Road or traveling east off hwy 167 around Kent and Auburn to the river, a good map will show you the river and different routes to the river.

Have not posted in a while, so just thought I'd start the new year with a report on the green river. Started out a Metzler Park around noon or so today & then moved down stream just below the hatchery at hwy 18 until 4pm. Did not touch a fish as I was tossing spoons & corkies, only saw 1 steelhead swim by that was 6 or 7 lbs. Talked to several other fisherman, same story, no fish for them as well.

I fished the area by hwy 18 throwing corky/yarn, sandshrimp, float n jigs, spoons with no hookups. My friend fished Metzler Park and caught one around 9 pounds, I guess I'll be there this weekend.

Went to the green today while the wife made dinner and even though the water was extremely high and fast Santa gave me a nice bright 12 lb hatchery buck steelhead. Caught him floating through two boulders using my homemade jigs with artificial roe integrated on them!!!

Fished the Green on Saturday at Flaming Geyser and CNRed 2 summer runs in about the 8lb range good looking, thick hatchery fish. Used home tie jigs in pink and purple rabbit fur with a white head. I got the second one with bobber and eggs, both within 10 minutes of each other in the same hole.I think i'm onto something with this jig pattern. Tight lines.

11/29/2013 - Stilts - Green River, King County, WA
Drove up above metzler at daybreak to wrestle with some chums as I need some more eggs. Fished a drift I haven't been to in over 20 years. Water looked a bit low, but found a deep green slot and pitched a pink corkie with cherise yarn and chunk of home dyed prawn. Nothing. Couldn't get a good drift beings it was so slow. Switched rods with float and purple headed 1/8 oz. jig with cherise body and bobber goes down on second pass through. Out of the water comes a mint bright steelhead! He beat me up pretty good, but with 20# power pro and 15# maxima leader, he wasn't gettin too far up or downstream from me. After a 10 minute battle I landed a 37" buck. He weighed 12.8 lbs according to my digi scale. Whacked it, marked the card, sat down for a minute, had a smoke and a shot of coffee and threw it back in. 5 casts later, a fished rolled at the tailout. I reeled in fast and got my jig just upstream from the splash and bobber goes down again. This time a brute of a hen chum that didn't look too bad, so I whacked her and went home. Not bad for an hour of fishing and 45 minutes of walking. Good day

Went out across from the golf course in the early morning. It was in the 20's and they have let loose the dam so the river is high and there is ice on the eyelets. Down between the 277th bridge and the course there were fish holding below the creek. Mostly rotting Chum. Fortunately, kept them off the line. Didn't land anything worthwhile.

11/17/2013 - Ted - Green River, King County, WA
I went to the Duwy by the Riverside casino with 2 of my friends for some late silvers and in coming chums; we hooked and kept 6 hen chums for the eggs for steelhead fishing and released a few big bucks. There were schools of chums rolling/surfacing. No silvers hooked as we threw the whole kitchen sink of fishing gear.

Hit the Green River with a couple buddys off the 18 and landed me a beautiful 6 lb steelhead. One of my friends caught a 10 lb coho and the other caught a couple of nice shiny chum. We were all drifting corkies. Water was clear and low. Fish occasionally jumping up and down the river. Pretty good haul for my first at this spot.

11/2/2013 - Redd Dwarf - Green River, King County, WA
Drifted from Whitney down to 18. Very very full of dead fish. My favorite is seeing all the people keeping boots. We fished the kitchen sink. There is a log down below the tree farm that is partially submerged and could cause problems if you don't watch for it. Easy to go around but from above it almost looks like a wave until you are closer and see it is a log causing the wave just under the surface.

Went to the green at flaming geyser in hopes of catching some steelheads or salmon and had no luck what so ever. Spent 6 hours and not even a bite!!! Used spoons, corkie and yarn, eggs, pink worms, crazy eggs, spinners and even threw some power bait out and still nothing. Any good spots for steelhead out there?

Fished my favorite hole on Sunday just down from 256th. Nothing but pinks. Again. But the numbers are dwindling. Seems the tribes got their nets out again until Friday. Seriously?! Wondering if it will be worth it to go out this Friday since they're apparently netting all week, even if it rains.
