Chehalis River Reports

The Chehalis is a popular river system for spring and fall chinook, coho and chum salmon, steelhead and sturgeon. Sea-run cutthroat have been planted into the lower river inter-tidal area. Try fishing this area near the bank on an incoming tide, or near the mouths of streams and sloughs. All wild steelhead must be released. At 28th Street Landing just west of the port of Grays Harbor dock in Hoquiam, coho returning from a net-pen rearing project provide recreational fishing. Check the current regulations pamphlet for information on salmon seasons. Single-point barbless hooks are required for all species from September 1 through November 15 in the river up to Porter, and from October 16 through November 15 above Porter. The river is open year-round, 24 hours a day for sturgeon. Disabled accessibility at South Montesano access - Level 3. WCT, DP, steep to river. / At Friend's Landing - Level 1. DP, WCT, fishing shelters, boat launch, blk top trails, boat floats, fish pier on river, totally accessible facility. For more information, call Grays Harbor Trout Unlimited, (360) 533-4648.

First time bank fishing for cohos behind Top Foods on a receding tide. Me and 8-10 others weren't having any luck. Local claimed only effective lure at this location is the Fox spinner and that was what most were using. Seals rolling nearby may have stopped any action.

Fished again behind Top Foods an hour of incoming tide. Tried Brads Twitching Jig covered in shrimp scent and it was a killer combo. Caught 3 nice Cohos and was out of there. Used 1/2 oz Hot Pink Head/Cerise Rabbit/Legs style twitching jig.

Fished the outgoing tide behind Top Foods this morning. Got my Coho limit in about 2 hours using #4 Blue Fox Spinners. Blue/Silver Blade with shrimp scent was the big ticket.

silvers are in the system boaters catching them on spinners mostly what I've seen at the launch. My boat is down so I've been fishing at the launch in Oakville. Bank fishing is very limited on this river.

1/9/2011 - Hunter - Chehalis River, Grays Harbor County, WA
Fished the Chehalis below and in the Satsop with no luck. Rivers changed a little since last time. tried side-drifting, back-bouncing, and casting plugs. Saw a chum jump and lots of fish on the the depth finder but no bites. A few boat and plunkers had nothing, too. Water was good but dirty.

12/6/2010 - Hunter - Chehalis River, Grays Harbor County, WA
first time on this river and saw a couple bent rods and heard the sound of dead ducks in the distance. Fished below the setsop plugs, corky & bait, bobber & bait with a couple bites. Saw one jump and heard of hatchery coho and steelhead being caught with herring or chrome plugs. the river looked good, not too low and a lot of boats and some plunkers. Good Luck!

10/16/2010 - KLONG - Chehalis River, Grays Harbor County, WA
Never seen so many fish at Cosmopolos in my life! I was able to cracker 4 Cohos in 3 hours. All the boats we talked to said the river is full of fish right now. Dont believe the false negative posts, fish are thick and plenty. 4 days fishing I filled a punch card easy and so has my girlfriend. Spinners and plugs.

Chehalis has been all but dead for the last 2 weeks down river from Cosmopolis and into the bay.

10/13/2010 - talsteen - Chehalis River, Grays Harbor County, WA
Put in at Fuller Bridge at daylight. Very foggy this morning. Went both up and down river. Saw one fish caught (not by me). Nothing even rolling. They were there last Thursday, but are gone now?? Tribes are netting so need to check the netting schedule before I go again. Plenty of boats, but not crowded.

10/2/2010 - ISAIAH BRAUGHT - Chehalis River, Grays Harbor County, WA
Been fishing above chehalis bridge by topps. In the past week seen fish being taken out. Good size chromers and a few jacks. heard latest word that the salmon are still out in the bay and ocean. was at friends landing and seen three coho taken out of boat. asked around either 2, 1, or skunked on the boats. hope we get a little rain to bring in the rush like last year. this late rain has really set back the catch for me unlike last year at this time. fishing was better then. i hope it will turn on. ohh if you fish of the bank next to topps, BEWARE for those pesky seals. seen two guys with nice fish on only to be stole away from those. q'? is there a seal season. count me in!

12/3/2009 - eric f. - Chehalis River, Grays Harbor County, WA
fished 5 hrs. on incoming water. tried everything that ever had worked in past trips at this time of year. native fishieres I feel have all but wiped out this once great winter sturgeon hangout. 4 of us in that time, and not a valid sturgeon take. lots of debris on top , lots of snags after flooding, on the bottom. would not recommend wasting time or fuel on that venture this time of year.

The Chehalis is a dead zone. No cars at the boat launches, a few dark ones rolling up high. Used to be good this time of year

Fished across from the Piling Hole this morning. Caught 1, lost 1, chrome silver with sea lice. Saw 2 or 3 others caught. Nets came out the other day, I'm sure that has taken its toll for a few days as usual.
