I didn't get to fish the Hood Canal Shrimp Opener as it conflicted with my 6 year old son's first T-Ball game. I did talk with three friends with whom I have fished the opener over the past five years. They all got their limits but no one fished the entire five hours. The north wind came in around 10:00 A.M. and made it real tough to find and pull the pots. I hear the guys were getting soaked while in neutral just pulling their pots. Four guys on two of the boats I know of lost their cookies on the way in. I understand the ramp at Misery Point was good entertainment for the sadists who enjoy watching people try to pull expensive boats out of the water at low tides in heavy winds on a marginal boat ramp. According to my sources, the shrimp were plentiful but lived up to the term "shrimp" and were smaller than in past years. Puss n Boots cat food, ground up fish and alaska fish fertilizer all mixed up together worked well for bait fished in 250-350 feet of water. Every one I talked to fished south of Oak Head. Notwithstanding the rough conditions, the guys I talked to, who are not already retired, are already working on the Wednesday morning flu so they can be out there for the Wednesday opening.

Got to the boat launch early. First time trying to find hoodsport and ended up a couple miles north for a good part of the day. LOTS of finning and fish. Came back and found hoodsport and stayed for a couple. Hooked three and enjoyed the time! Fish all over.

Went to Hoodsport hatchery yesterday (07/24/13), after clamming at Cushman Park, and saw quite a few Chinook and Humpies, so decided to make a trek the next day. Unfortunately I was unaware that the tribes were going to be netting...they were doing beach-seine netting in three places, completely covering the fishing area. Found out they will be netting on TUE & THU, 7AM to 4PM. So...the fish are there, but choose a proper day before you go.

Headed out in the heavy freezing fog today. Finally found the hatchery at Hoodsport. Only 2 other guys there, Could barely see the water. Fishing from a boat, my buddy and I and his 10 year old son, never had so much fun. First 4 casts got 4 chums hooked, all hens. Using corkies in green, with purple and pink yard. About 3 feet of leader. I heard the run was over, but these fish were all real bright. There was 3 or 4 groups of fish, with around 50 or 60 in each group. Ended up hooking around 60 - 80 all together. A smattering of them ended up being foul hooked. But those went back in the water. The sun didn't shine till almost 1, thank God. I don't think our hands could have taken any more. As soon as the sun came up about 20 fisherman showed up. All but 2 were doing things right. Some of them were foul hooking them, but throwing them back. The other 2 insisted on snagging and keeping, and of course throwing across everyone. We just went with bigger line. And made sure our lines, cut theirs. I know that may not be right. But the other fisherman, got to fish while those 2 kept having to re tie. Oh and all were females, and bright pink meat. Im going to try and fry some up, even though everyone says they are no good. OH and this was all of our first trips for chum. Good memories

Hit the hatchery at Hoodsport today from high tide @ 6:15 or so to around 10:00. SLOW that might not even be accurate how about DEAD or just plain NOTHING. 15 people fishing plus five boats following the dropping tide and not one single fish or hookup. The gentleman working the hatchery said they brought in 100 Pinks the night before and have a handful of Kings so far total.
There was a nice big school in Finch Creek. Next chance will be to try another evening session after work. FYI, if I read the info on the hatchery wall right they net on Tuesday and Thursday inside the Hatchery zone.
