Hit the wind and the kalama and the Lewis last week....
The Wind was light, the kalama was light, the lewis had the fish but
there was alot of presure at the main spots..
Hitting the Cowlitz this Friday............Vic
Floated the Kalama today from Pritchards to Mahaffey's Campground. Boated a 17.2lb B-Run Coho (hatchery keeper), released two 23lb Fall Kings, perfectly bright fish. Standard Wigglers, Pink Jigs, Vibrax Spinners.
The Kalama was in a lot better shape today. Lost one steelhead about 5 feet from the bank, and missed another one. Saw only about 3 drift boats, and didn't see any fish caught.
I decided to head up to Barrier Dam this morning. Without so much as a strike in 4 1/2 hours, I decided to pack up and hit the Kalama on the way home. I started out at the Red Barn hole floating a orange and black jig tipped with shrimp. On my third cast, my float went under hard, and my heart started to race. I reeled up the slack and set the hook. I was excited until the fish got close to shore and when it rolled, I saw a golden brown color. SUCKER FISH!!! ARRRRGGHH!! It put up a good little fight and I am guessing it was around 5 or 6 pounds, but a big let down. That was my only fish of the day. I had a few other strikes, but no hook-ups. The water level and conditions look great though. Really good coloring in the water, just need the fish to move in.
fished Kalama, no fish caught by anyone. no fish present another week or two and things should be good. heard of a native and a late run nook caught by boaters. rivers in great shape, good fishin
I woke up at 5:30 am to find it was pouring rain and pretty windy. I decide that I would hit the river another day and went back to bed.
I got back up around 8 and prepared myself for another day around the house. As I was making breakfast, I noticed that the rain was letting up and I could actually see some patches of blue sky. I finally made my mind up that I was not going to let my chance get away.
I got to the river around 10. I made my normal stop in at Mahaffry's and was told that fishing had been "fair". Winter fish were starting to come in and a few in the 15lb range had been caught last week.
I stopped at the "beginner's hole" (no Bigfoot sightings)and decided not to join the 8 or 9 people fishing there already, so I headed up to the "red barn hole."
Fished there for about 2 hours with one missed solid strike on a pink corky and raw shrimp. People started to show up there, so I moved down river to my buddy's property which is across from Pritchard's store.
I worked that whole stretch pretty hard for the rest of the day. I did manage to pick up a nice native summer run that was probably around 7-8 lbs or so. (Sorry no pics, I haven't mastered taking pics of fish I release yet). I caught him on a pink and white marabou jig. About 4 1/2 foot leader.
Also managed to cracker a nice winter fish that I imagine was around 12lbs or so. It nailed a pink worm/pink corky. After some strong leaps, it took me into some fast water and my 8lb leader was not enough to get it back in.
All in all it wasn't a bad day fishing, but I would have really liked to put something in the freezer.
The river actually looked in pretty good shape. I would say visibility was over a foot and had a nice "steelhead green" look to it. Water was a bit on the high side, but very fishable. Fishing should only improve if we don't get too much rain this time around.
river blown bad, super fast very muddy floated eggs and shrimp tails into calmer holes had one hit in 3 hrs didnt get the hook in him. stuck to the lower part of the river will try again in a week or so
Fished Hard today and It Paid off for my clients and I. Started At Prichards and Floated to Modrow. We went a a perfect 4-4 with a couple great take downs.
Nice day to fish, Drifted kalama from red barn on down to I-5. Hooked 1 native 4 pounds on purple plug. Saw 1 other fish hooked out of 5 boats. No sign of any springers yet. good luck to all!!
got to red barn at first light. ben bangin em all week since opener. usin bow mac sm j2 jigs tiped with prawn. carded 7 fish in 4 days. counted 7 guys at beginners hole with 10 fish. drift boats killen em.
Floated from red barn to I-5 take out with my brother today from first light until 2 pm. 0/1 on fish the only action we had was on a diver and bait setup(**** shrimp and spin-glo). Real slow take so I'm guessing it had some size to it. Only heard of 1 fish taken. 25+ boats. Lotta people lost fish. Up higher, visability was 4-6 feet easy.
WOW, lots of fish here, both nooks and silvers. Fish ON
