Fishing at Neah Bay over the opener was productive for those who put in the time and didn't get distracted. After a few hours of nothing I wanted to go to Bamfield and have breakfast but my crew wouldn't allow it. One was scared to go any further out. The other insisted there were halibut there if we were just patient. As the debate raged, George, the fisherman, hooked into a flatty and there we stayed till 4:00 P.M. hooking one every two hours. The next day was even slower. But the weather held and, even though we were a small 19 foot Glassply challenging the mighty Pacific, we got through the weekend without ever getting seriously scared. Perhaps it was the refreshments!! We tied up behind Jim and Bruce, the gamefishin crew, and hope to spend more time with those guys on another outing. They got out earlier each morning than we did, but we stayed later. We had most of our success on octopus and herring, although we did get on or two on jigs. 275 feet. I suppose the radical tides had something to do with the slow fishing, or are we fishing out the new fishery that we have developed to replace the sport salmon fishery?? It is now Monday, we put up 125 lbs of fillets, and as I stood in the shower I was still rockin and rollin. Maybe it's the refreshments!! In two weeks the deep sea halibut boat becomes a shrimper in Hood Canal. I sure do love the Pacific Northwest!!!

Big Salmon resort in Neah Bay has new operators. Joey and Dawn Lawrence and family have taken over and really changed things for the better and are very helpful and friendly. They've repaired the gas docks and put in new pumps, rearranged the store and added more stock and hired some new help and are open from 4:30am to 10:00pm during spring and summer. Joey and his son both own big commercial fishing boats so they know what it's all about. It's great to have good people running the place.
Now for the fishing: My wife and I have been fishing there every spring for the past few years and used to only dream of this kind of fishing. Seeing whales and eagles come right up next to the boat is awesome (kind of a spiritual experience), and our elderly friends and relatives love it when we bring home lots of fresh filets. Ralph, the fish cleaning guy at the dock does such a great job for so little money and is so fast(10 seconds per fish average)that all we have to do is trim the brown fat and what few bones there are left off the filets and vacuum pack them right on the boat and put them in Big Salmons freezer until we get ready to go home, of coarse we keep a few out and fire up the alcohol stove and fry them in butter with a little Johnny's seasoning and YUMM!
This year, we've fished every weekend since april 1st and have limited out on everything that is legal and the more that opens the more we limit out on. During all of this we have hooked into some big halibut in some strange places but couldn't keep them because it wasn't open yet(catch and release, great fun but an hours worth of hard work just to let it go will make you insane, and yes I did take pictures). Tomorrow, however, if we catch one as long as the boat is wide we're not letting it go. If we can find that big monster again we might have a chance in the derby at Big Salmon, (sounds like a fish story in the making). God bless your fishin'

Still great salmon fishing in Neah Bay. One of my fish finders was out on the bay trolling. They stopped the boat for a while and were casting by the shore when all of the sudden whammy, his mom landed a 26lb King. They caught 6 salmon in all making for a great days fishin.
