I am looking at doing more Kokanee fishing and was reading an article by Bill Herzog and he favors direct drive reels like the old Shimano 201. What does everybody else use? How about a rod?

Lamiglas makes a nice specialty rod for kokanee.

Ambassadeur 4600 (although any low-profile baitcaster will work fine.)

Nothing beats the shear joy nor the utter frustration of fishing with a two year old. |

I just recently bought a Shimano 201 Cardiff, and a 7' UL Lamiglass casting rod, total package about 200.00 but love it and you get some crazy sensitivity, Lamiglass also makes a 7'6" one piece that is flimsy and looks like a lot of fun, but i don't like yellow rods and one piecers, great setup though

For a good downrigger rod (very expensive though) I use a 4Wt GLX blank, rewraped with the lightest single foot guides I could find with a shimano scorpion level wind reel loaded with 6 lb/4 lb line.... yea I know, I got a real fishing problem. Sometimes the best is not good enough when it comes to fishing gear.... just ask my better half.

There is always room for improvements in fishing. Especially inriver commercial harvesters

In the article you where reading or the one before that in STS he talks about using a fly reel filled with mono for fishing kokanee also. I believe that Shimano 201s are hard to come by because they are not made any more.

I have the lamiglass one piece kokanee rod and love - will be adding another before spring. I pair them with direct drive reels - currently using a couple of my old bass reels. The one on my lamiglass now is a shimano black magna.
The soft rod and free wheeling reel coupled with drop shot hooks have reduced the number of kokanee that I loss to a bare minimum - typcially land 85/90% of the fish that I hook.
Tight lines
Curt
