No boat needed. Go to Cornet bay past deception pass and watch,if there pulling little shinny things out of the water fish there. If not drive up to the marina in Oak Harbor and give it a try.
Got lost on the way to work and found the river.

Still maybe a little early, but Everrett is a good place to go when they're in.  Also the marina(s) up at La Conner but that's still about a month off too I think.
I may be lost, but I'm making good time!

Most down this way hit the cowlitz but the last few years have been bleak to say the least....hopefully this year will be different.

Expect a year like last year for the cowlitz. Will be very few smelt.... maybe none.Dead If the river stays muddy expect what few come back, to spawn in the mainstem of the Columbia.

my buddies parents have been going up on the weekends up to deception pass jigging for them. they've been coming home with loads. super good deep fried. Dip netting for them down south on the columbia or cowlitz has been dismal the last 5-10 years. this year doesn't look good either. search wdfw site for columbia river smelt and they'll give you updates on it and what the commercial guys are doing.
