2011 eastside elk success

Postby mavsled on Tue Nov 08, 2011 11:52 pm

a good hunt. 3 spike bulls for 4 hunters in the MAV's camp.
named the "hardcore camp" as others noted we left camp in the dark and returned to camp in the dark. No 10am around the campfire beers for my group.
hunted my fave elk area, now 44 years. noted more hunters than usual in "our" area of operation.

Opening morning, I passed on a nice legal spike. At less than 60 yards broadside but a cow directly on the bulls opposite side. The cow entered the meadow first, followed by the spike moving up alongside it. No shot as my 300 WM would have blown thru the spike and likely killed the cow too. Man that was tough to pass. The two elk spooked seconds later offering no good shot and minutes later a hunter showed up moving thru the elks trail. Alas, it was close to being over early opening morning but not to be for me. Then the hunter spotted me and walked on over, asking me where he was! yep, he was new to the area.
so I sent him down into the deep canyon, hoping he'd dog one out for me. never saw him again wink:

Over the next few days, spotted a few nice branch antlered bulls. Passed on a bull calf (young bull with very small velvety antler growth), saw another spike but it saw me first and the timber swallowed him up before I could even get the rifle up. Hunting friend put down the first bull Wednesday, another partner got his bull Thursday morning. Helped pack that one out and at the end of the day Thurs, I had them drop me off at my father's favorite meadow stand for the last hour hunt.

5:45pm, 11 elk appeared above me about 375-400 yards away. 6pt, several cows, another bull calf and decent dark horned spike. But then bringing up the rear was the spike I was looking for. Sweeping spikes, good sized body, blonde hide and tapered hard antler tips.
Quick range put him at 410 yards, calm & almost no wind. The evening quiet was settling upon us. Rested the ol' Browning magnum on the pack, a little hold over with the horizontal cross hair even with it's back and verticle cross behind it's sholder... and a squeeze of the trigger.

BOOooom,,, echoed the 300 WMag across the canyon. The spike bull stutter stepped, move down the hill about 20 yards and stopped with its nose toward the ground. A second shot, held at ear tip level, entered about 6" below the ear, center of the neck. With that the spike crashed down, rolled down the steep hill about 40 yards and was stopped by some small trees. My rifle, sighted in at 3.5" dead center high at 100 yards had done it's duty with proper hold at 410 and 385 yards. First shot took out a lung, entered heart cavity but not much damage to the heart. Second shot broke its neck but the spike bull was pretty much dead on its feet by the 1st shot. By the time I made it up to the beast, near darkness had settled in. A quick pic, elk gutted with aid of headlamp and returned to camp around 10pm. My, how the work starts after the trigger is squeezed! I never get tired of that kind of work.
by Saturday noon, I had completed the bone out/pack out and settled in to enjoy the sunny but cold weather. Then a couple Budweisers flowed. And realized with tired muscles and aches that age will catch me oneday, like those other elk hunters in elk hunter's heaven who taught me everything I know about elk hunting. Might have to get a pack horse or rent a mule in the future. :)

Great job!

btw: Sitka Optifade open country camo is fantastic!
style: 90% jacket & pants, Bandit neck/face cover, hat, traverse beanie and traverse zip-t midlayer. And a nice FADED orange camo fleck vest (non Sitka), to be modern firearm legal.

of course I hunted and positioned with the wind right, movement limited and no direct eye contact with the elk....as always and in past years.
but I had a perfect 2pt-forked bull w/no eye guards within 10 FEET of me. The bull walked right down the trail for over 60 yards, passing so close to me that I dare not to breathe; in fear of startling the bull and perhaps being gored, stomped or something.
and the bull had been alarmed by other hunters but took it's time in moving by me. This close range occurence also happened with over a dozen cows/calves during the 9 days of in the field hunting.
It probably also helped that I kept clean during the entire hunting trip. Took time to wash, clean every night in camp. All non scented, clean up stuff. and saved my hunting clothes for hunting, not cooking in them but sheltering my hunt clothes from camp scents.
but couldn't keep the Bogie Dawg away, he's one of those love to be petted dogs. wink:

I also had a bobcat walk 50+ yards toward me and when it was within 30', I moved. It stopped stared me down and casually pussy footed away for over 40 yards in my vision. the bobcat continued to look in my direction as it proceeded to tip toe away, but always looked slightly off to either side of me. A coyote too also came within 20 yards but never noticed me and passed on by. I intentionally didn't move just to see if the yote would spot me.

NEVER in all my 44+ years of elk hunting have I had so many elk within 20 yards of me; the elk seemed to look right past or through me, not AT me.

so now I own a complete set of Sitka Optifade in forest camo pattern too for my wetside (WA, OR)/evergreen hunting and for treestand use.
Style: 90% pants, Stratus fleece lined jacket, Traverse Zip-T mid layer, bandit, cap and beanie, merino gloves. And for very wet protection; Downpour jacket and pants.
all brand new with tags from seller on Ebay and saved a season clearance 30% off.

sitka optifade rocks!!

It looks like you bone out everything but the hinds and front legs for the pack out. Is that right?

How long do you wait until butchering and freezing?

Mav, I sure am glad the 40+ elk we have shot just up the hill from you were never bothered by Red Plaid wool jackets with Orange vest over them.

GillRaker: to your question How long do you wait until butchering and freezing? Wild meat like Elk and Deer don't have to hang and age like beef because the fat is on the outside of the meat and not marbled through it. We have let them hang a couple of days and then cut them and packaged.

gillraker: I like to hang the meat at cool temps (sub 40) for a week. true, meat is not marbled like beef and fat is mostly on the outside. But hanging a few days to a week+ but at proper cool temps allows the protein to break down and results in more tender tablefare. Especially with those big, mature bulls.
>>And myself, I only bring out hind quarters but bone out the entire front half. Partners of mine like to bring out the shoulders of the front quarters. Me, I just butcher and bone the shoulders, ribs, neck, leg meat and strip the backstraps of the front half. Comes from my pack in elk hunting days of years ago non-resident hunting in CO & WY.

fish4fun: its the close range that I'm happy with the new camo. But also the fit and comfort, wicking etc of the new outfits. This years spike was taken at a range of 410 yards with the first shot, only 2nd in distance to my longest shot on a bull elk with modern magnum rifle. But my Oregon 5pt rosey bull couple years ago was taken at 25 yards with archery equipment. AND that was a rush!

I just like getting close and practice my archery shot in my mind. Archery hunting along with the practice and skill it requires throughout the year prior to hunting season is very addicting.
