Best way to Connect outboards?

Postby uhlern on Sun Jan 29, 2012 2:58 pm

I have a 16ft smokercraft promag and am looking to connect my main outboard 70 horse yamaha to my kicker 8horse yamaha. The kicker is mounted to one of those up/down adjustable mounts so it sticks out a bit from the boat.

What are my options?

there are 2 easy to obtain options.

#1 and the one you will be most happy with but will cost you is the EZ Steer system. its the best but expensive about $300-350 new, id scour craigslist for a used unit.

#2 Stearns makes a similar, cheaper but not as flexible steering rod for $50 for nickel (rust ball) and $100 for stainless. i used one for years but unlike what the packaging says you cant tilt either motor very far without breaking something. this option might work for a small boat setup but i had to disconnect and reconnect it anytime i needed to go fast. west marine has these.

Uhlern,

Here's the EZ-Steer set-up on my SmokerCraft Osprey, it's the "Medium" length model with a limiting strap they make on it. I had the "Long " model when I had my Bayliner because I have the kicker bracket located on the swim step so the kicker sat farther out from the main motor.

In both applications they work great! For the money it's worth it unless you want to shell out the $$ for a Pro-Troll. But I haven't had any problems with the EZ-Steer, and highly recommend them.

EZ Steer is most likely your best bet. I have used them for years with relatively few problems. Last Summer I think I let the arm on my kicker get a bit loose and it broke. I replaced just that one arm for around $60. Be sure to have the right drive for your drill to tighten those stainless steel belts!
