What does LOA really mean?

Postby fishalope » Sat Mar 14, 2009 10:09 am

I am a little confused conf: I have always thought that a boat's LOA was the measurement from bow to stern. Does it include the outboard bracket? The marine survey on my boat lists it as having a 21 foot LOA but the Stabicraft website doesn't list it as that long, who is correct? Also, do most manufacturers advertise LOA as the size of the boat? Finally, if crossing the bar under restricted conditions how do you determine if you fall in a certain category?

I figure if anyone knows the answers to my questions, my Gamefishin buddies will.. Tup:

Thanks in advance..

There is no standard anymore, it all depends on what the manufacturer wants to market the boat as. Your boats builder has elected to go with the dimensions obtained without the bracket some measure with the bracket.If it were me on the restricted bar crossing I would use the measurement without the bracket.

LOA = Length Over ALL = measures the total boat's length

LOD = Length Over Deck = the total boat length without extensions

LBP = Length Between Perpendiculars (often, not always) LWL

LWL = Length OF WATERLINE
