Once or twice a year I give em a full cleaning with Castrol supper clean. Then wash them right after with JOY.
It cleans them pretty good. Your corks will look like new. But make sure you wear gloves. You don't want that stuff on your hands to long. Trust me I learned the hard way. MY hands were swollen/ dry for a week the first time I used it.
You might try simple green too. It's pretty good, and not as harsh.

simple green would be the next option for me..theres also lighter fluid... like the kind that goes in zippos, although ive never tried that... read up on it first as it may eat the clear off the rod... the books i have on fishing for cutthroat stated that if you wipe your rods down with wd that they will last you for years (salt water).. so im sure it wont hurt the coating as these are frank amato books..

Try 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and warm water after that wipe with wet rag or rinse with clean water.
Thats why they call it fishing not catching.

That bites,I never have had that happen. Do you use a lot of sulphite cures ? Mainly straight borax for my eggs.

I've had it happen to Lami's...only Lami's for some reason but not all. Once it starts it's just going to take off the finish in patches. Cleaning it won't help much IMO. If appearance is important it's an opportunity to learn how to refinish a rod.

boiling hot water has a chance of loosening the 2 part epoxy they use for the glue in the handle.....probably not a good idea. you might have your reel seat pop loose when you go to set the hook.

not really.....i bait 3 at a time most times and the goo collects where the hook catch on the rod is. tried hooking leaders to my reels but that makes an even bigger mess of the reels. its starting to collect on my new st. croix's and i'd like to nip it in the bud now before it gets outta hand. hey tillerdemon, wont acetone take the finish off?

I think I'd try using some plastic wrap the stuff you wrap sandwiches in,around the eggs the hook point could still stick through it into the hook holder. The cheaper brands don't stick together real well so it should not be a pain to remove.

Over a couple of seasons of egg glue love I went with the following. A hanging towel from the waist belt and all is good. If your in a boat same idea bring a towel. This works better for me.... I would rather spend the time wiping off my hands and hook's every now and again then spend the time with a nasty mess. My rod's never got bad enough that I ever needed anything other than a scrub pad and some hot water. My .02$ doesnt help with your current situation but may help in the future

If it's clipped bonk it!

A shot glass of rubbing alcohol, shot glass of Joy or dawn dish soap and a cup of hot tap water.Wet the rod down with the solution and let it sit awile then scrub it and repeat until goo is gone. Rinse and dry then wipe down with reel magic.
